The Web PIM recap - April 25, 2000
hello all,
well, this Tuesday's PIM was another mighty fine time, with somewhere
around four hundred folks handing out business cards while conspiring and
imbibing (or maybe that was just me). our new venue, Jillian's at Sony
Metreon, handled all comers graciously (and with ample elbow room) while
event sponsors Application Park
<http://www.applicationpark.com>
and
Leapnet
<http://www.quantum.leapnet.com>
walked the walk and talked the
talk (around the PIM and elsewhere, I'm sure). and yes, I have visuals, but
a few words from the PIMstress (me) first.
two and a half years into this PIM thing, our trusty little event is still
*the* friendliest networking event in the local Internet and hi-tech
community. yes, keeping it attitude-free is very important to us, as is the
concept of hooking people up. the PIM is about meeting people and making
connections, and my undying gratitude goes out to co-PIMstress Suzanne
Anderson for helping to make this happen, along with greeters Katherine
Mendonca and Lou Fischer and table goddess Lara Thurman and her crew. WoW
steering crew members Chia-lin Simmons, Nancy Purcell, Amy Lightholder and
Nancy MacGregor were also on hand, talking the SF WoW talk and putting a
face to the organization's wonderful, tireless leadership. and lots of
WoWsers made the scene (Mary Beth Ray, Doris Beers, Lata Narumanch...)
along with a slew of industry folk telling tales of success and overwork --
oh yeah, it's one and the same.
buzzword(s) of the latest PIM? "I'm hiring!" yep, it seemed everyone there
was in a hiring mood, desperately trying to latch onto those job seekers
who had affixed a small blue "lookin' for a job" dot onto their name
tag. some of those with cool jobs to burn: Glenn Scherrer, biz dev head at
Andale
<http://www.andale.com>,
now 100 employees strong and with 70 job
recs to fill; Kerry Eleveld of Miz Biz
<http://www.mizbiz.com>,who wants
editors and writers; Brooke Brierly of Paladin
<http://www.paladinstaff.com>,
reminding me that her recruiting shop is
woman-run; Mary Parks of VocalPoint
<http://www.vocalpoint.com>,
who needs
some good telephony engineers; Michael Jennings of LinuxCare
<http://www.linuxcare.com>,
who needs Perl and Java programmers; Danielle
Restaino, MarCommManager at MyPersonal
<http://www.mypersonal.com>
who
always covets a few good hires; and Maria Feher of KiraCom
<http://www.kiracom.com>
which has just launched, so you do the math (read:
hires).
new companies I learned about at the PIM? Greenfield Online
<http://www.greenfield.com>,
all about Internet marketing research as
adroitly explained by their Director of Strategic Alliances, Bob Ferro;
Papaya
<http://www.papaya.net>,
which is my favorite fruit and has a very
flash-y site; OpNet
<http://www.opnetwork.org>,
which is working to bridge
the digital divide and needs *mentors* according to Director of Industry
Relations Victor Littles; GoMingle
<http://www.gomingle.com>,
which should
form an alliance with MyPersonal; Banter Technology
<http://www.banter.com>
-- are they mingling with GetPersonal?; and J-women.com
<http://www.j-women.com>,
well represented by BizDev maven Gina Bertolino,
who tells me that this site for Japanese women wants to form partnerships
NOW.
okay, as promised, the visuals. big thanks to Jamie Ferro
<jrferro@img3.com> for putting
together a cool slideshow of the PIM
for us. thanks also to the folks at mSlide
<http://www.mslide.com> for
creating the technology and kudos to Betsy Sanner at smashcast
<BetsyS@smashcast.com> for
puttin' the thing up. go to this URL
http://www.mslide.com/Launch.asp?MSLIDE_ID=15565
and check it out. and the link works best with the Windows Player and on IE
(don't blame me, just watch it, okay? it's really fun.)
next PIM is late June, details later on...
